Three-way race for MDJ – the result
The first sign of the May 16, 2017 primary election was red-on-white “Rasul Aquil Judge” and the biggest sign to appear before election day was candidate Marc Taiani’s white-on-blue. Of the three candidates for magisterial district justice (MDJ ), incumbent Kim Coles-Hoots had the fewest signs.
The term of office is six years, so the last primary election for this office was in May 2011. The magisterial district is Wilkinsburg plus Edgewood, Edgewood having been added to the district before P11 after it had been a district itself. People who remember the P11 race between Kim Hoots, incumbent who had served one six-year term at the time, and new candidate Marc Taiani, speculated what the effect of a third candidate in the P17 race would be. The result of the May 16, 2017 election was Coles-Hoots 1638; Taiani 973; Aquil 353. (I was one who speculated, and I overestimated the number of voters who would vote for Mr. Aquil. If all votes for Aquil had gone to Taiani, the result would have been unchanged.)
This is the comparison by election district of the P11 and P17 races–
|ward||district||poll location||Coles-Hoots difference
P17 – P11
P17 – P11
|Net gain 230||Net gain 87||353|
